Try to find embroidery pricing online. Go ahead, most shops make you fill out a form, wait for a callback, and sit through a pitch before anyone says a number. That’s not because pricing is complicated. It’s because vague pricing is easier to inflate.

We publish ours. Here’s exactly what custom embroidery costs at Edge Embroidery in the Scottsdale Airpark, why each line item exists, and three fully worked orders so you can check our math.

The Actual Price List

Item Price
Standard embroidery (up to 5″×5″) $20 per item
Personalized names $30 per item
3D puff (raised stitching) +$5 per item
Metallic thread +$10 per item
Specialty threads +$30 per item
Logo digitizing (one-time, kept forever) $55
Text-only setup $10
Golf bags $75

No minimums. One jacket is a real order. The full breakdown lives on our pricing page, and we’ll beat any written quote you bring us.

Why Digitizing Exists (and Why It’s $55)

This is the fee that confuses people, so let’s demystify it. An embroidery machine can’t read a JPG. Someone has to convert your logo into a stitch file, deciding stitch types, densities, angles, underlay, and the exact path the needle travels. Done lazily, your logo puckers, gaps, and blurs. Done right, it sews clean on the thousandth piece. That’s skilled work, which is why it costs money everywhere.

Here’s what matters: at Edge, digitizing is $55, once, ever. We keep your file forever, so every reorder skips setup entirely. One honest detail most shops bury: caps, flats, and bags each need their own file, because stitching onto a curved cap crown is a different engineering problem than a flat polo chest. Same logo, different physics. And before we run production, we sew you a physical proof, you approve actual thread on actual fabric, not a screen mockup.

Three Real Orders, Fully Worked

Example 1: 12 company polos, first order

  • 12 polos × $20 standard left-chest embroidery = $240
  • One-time logo digitizing = $55
  • Total: $295, about $24.58 per shirt, and the $55 never appears again.

Example 2: 6 caps with 3D puff, new cap file

  • 6 caps × ($20 + $5 puff) = $150
  • One-time cap digitizing file = $55
  • Total: $205, and your cap file is on record for every future hat order.

Example 3: 24 uniform shirts, reorder

  • 24 shirts × $20 = $480
  • Digitizing: $0, we already have your file
  • Total: $480 flat. No setup, no “art retrieval fee,” no nonsense. This is where keeping your file forever pays off.

What Makes the Price Go Up

Speed. Standard turnaround is 7–10 business days. Need it sooner? Rush service delivers in 1 to 5 days:

Turnaround Surcharge
Standard (7–10 business days) None
5-day rush From +10%
1-day rush Up to +100%

The faster the deadline, the higher the surcharge within that +10% to +100% range, rush work means rearranging the production schedule, and honest pricing reflects that instead of hiding it.

Add-ons. 3D puff adds $5, metallic thread adds $10, specialty threads add $30, and personalized names run $30 per item. Text-only jobs skip full digitizing and take a $10 setup instead.

What Makes the Price Go Down

  • Free embroidery on catalog garments. Buy your garments through the SanMar catalog with us and the 5″×5″ embroidery is free. You’re paying for the shirt; the stitching is on the house.
  • 10% veteran discount. You served; that’s worth ten percent, every order.
  • 10% cash discount. Skip the card processor, keep the savings.
  • Reorders. Your digitized file is kept forever, so repeat orders never pay setup again.
  • Written quotes. Bring us any written quote and we’ll beat it.

Questions to Ask Any Embroidery Shop Before Paying

  • “Is digitizing one-time, and do you keep my file?” Some shops charge setup on every order or hold your file hostage. Get it in writing.
  • “Do I approve a sewn proof before production?” A stitched sample catches problems a digital mockup never will.
  • “Is there a minimum?” If you need 6 pieces and their minimum is 24, you’re buying 18 shirts nobody wears.
  • “What’s the all-in per-item price?” Watch for thread-change fees, art fees, and handling fees that appear after you commit.
  • “What materials do you run?” Backings and threads determine whether the logo outlives the shirt. Ours are USA-made.

FAQ

Why do caps cost a separate digitizing fee if I already paid for my logo?

Because a cap file isn’t a resized polo file. Stitching onto a curved, structured crown requires different pathing and densities, so it’s genuinely a second engineering job. Once it’s built, it’s yours forever like the first one.

Is there really no minimum order?

Really. One polo, one cap, one golf bag, all normal orders at normal prices. No minimums, no small-order penalty.

What if I only need text, like a name over a pocket?

Text-only work skips full digitizing, setup is just $10, and personalized names run $30 per item.
